Background Info

Mouse Hepatitis Virus refers to a large group of single stranded RNA viruses of the family Coronaviridae, genus Betacoronavirus. The virus is an enveloped RNA virus of pleomorphic shape, roughly 80-160 nm in diameter. MHV is extremely contagious. Mode of transmission is primarily aerosol, direct contact, and fomites, with experimental transmission possible via transplantable tumors. Infection usually presents with lesions in various organs and necrosis of the liver and lymphoid tissue. Mice are the only natural carriers of MHV, although rats have been shown to have the ability to carry the disease.
