Background Info

Pasteurella pneumotropica is a gram-negative bacterium of the family Pasteurellaceae. Several species host this disease including mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters, but natural outbreaks are rare and infections of this pathogen alone often present no clinical symptoms. P. pneumotropica usually inhabits the upper respiratory tract and is transmitted via nasal or oral secretions. P. pneumotropica can often be found as a copathogen of M. pulmonis or Sendai virus when a disease state is present in the host. Despite its name, there is very little current research to suggest P. pneumotropica infects pulmonary tissue. Instead it is found in lesion of the epidermis, conjunctiva, lacrimal glands, and muscle tissue.
