Mouse adenoviruses are double stranded DNA viruses of the family Adenoviridae, genus Mastadenovirus. The virus is a nonenveloped, regular icosahedron with a diameter of 70-90 nm. Two strains of mouse adenoviruses are known, FL-1 (MAd-1) and K87(MAd-2). Transmission of the virus occurs through close or direct contact. FL-1 can be shed in urine, and K87 can be shed in feces. Experimental infection of suckling mice causes necrosis of the kidney, heart, spleen, and brain. Mice and rats appear to be the only hosts of the viruses.
