Background Info

Reovirus type 3 is a double stranded, nonenveloped DNA virus of the family Reoviridae, genus Orthoreovirus. Primary means of transmission is through the fecal-oral route with aerosol transmission being considered possible. In addition, the contamination of transplantable tumors and cell lines with this virus has been of some literary importance. Natural infection of Reovirus type 3 usually produces no symptoms. Experimental infection can present with lesions and necrosis of the liver, lungs, intestines, and heart. Rats, mice, hamsters, and guinea pigs are all hosts of this virus. Antibodies to Reovirus type 3 have been detected in mammals, birds, reptiles and fish.
