Background Info

Sendai virus is a spherical RNA virus of the family Paramyxoviridae, genus Paramyxovirus. Transmission of the virus occurs via the respiratory tract through direct contact or airborne particles. Sendai virus is extremely contagious, with certain strains, as well as infant mice and rats being more susceptible to infection. Infection presents initially in the nasal passage, and then descends to the bronchioles, causing bronchitis. Co-infection with other organisms, such as Mycoplasma pulmonis, leads to a high mortality associated with this disease. Sendai virus has been found in the respiratory tracts of mice, rats, guinea pigs, and hamsters.
