Mumps is an infectious disease caused by a virus. It can be spread by an infected person’s mucus or saliva. Swelling of the throat and salivary glands are the most common symptoms. Fever, headaches, and muscle pains can also occur. The symptoms can last up to anywhere from 2-4 weeks. Some infected individuals show no symptoms whatsoever. Mumps can be treated and prevented with a vaccine.
