Background Info

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is an enveloped RNA virus of the family Paramyxoviridae, genus Pneumovirus. Transmission of the disease is through aerosol or direct contact. RSV is one of the most common causes of lower respiratory infection in human. It is most prevalent in young children and the elderly. Because of the current absence of a vaccine for this virus, animal models are important to studying clinical signs and pathological mechanisms. Rats, mice, sheep, non-human primates, and calves have all been used as animal models of the disease, with mice be the most common.
