Simian Immunodeficiency Virus is a retrovirus from the genus lentivirus, which is responsible for infections in many non-human primates. Similar to AIDS in humans, SIV strains that infect monkeys are sexually transmitted and usually do not cause disease in their natural carriers. They can cause an AIDS-like immune deficiency called SAIDS (Simian AIDS) if they cross the boundaries between species.
